Future Plans with kerPlunk

Category: Feature Additions
Posted: 2008-10-18 23:01, Edited: 2008-10-19 17:14

The kerPlunk project is running smoothly now. We have also made a few improvements to the program(which you can use the program updater to install). We also have a lot of ideas and we plan to do some great stuff with kerPlunk to make it a unique program.

First of all, we will be adding text chat, so it will be similar to other popular programs such as AIM, Yahoo!, or Skype. This is a short term feature addition.

Phone call logging will be available shortly to users who want to view past calls. They will be able to access this through their kerPlunk client as well as through this website using your account.

Whats the program without a buddy list? Yeah that's pretty much what we were thinking. We are working on this.

Next we will be getting into longer term feature additions. A voice to text feature will be added. This means if you want to have a voice conversation with someone who is in a meeting, you may still use your headset to talk to them, and they will be able to read your conversations. They will also be able to type back to you and you will be able to hear what they are saying through a text to speech application. We also plan to add translation with both text chat and voice chat, as well as voice to text conversations.

New Hardware Deployed

Last night I added 2 computers to run kerPlunk to my small server "farm". They are running bare versions of Windows and our custom server software (Using around 65mb of memory each, with kerPlunk server software loaded). When one server is loaded up with work, your requests get transferred to the other server, and same if a server goes out. All data is shared between the two machines, which means we won't have data loss when a machine decides to go belly up. I ran some speed tests on this system and compared them to my testing computer's speed (which was my laptop), and the dual server cluster was slightly slower, but my laptop is quite a bit faster than both computers combined so that makes sense. This custom server software makes it easy to expand on itself with more computers in any location, whether in my small "farm" or not.

Update 10/12/08 in kerPlunk Client:
Homebrew Updater - Not that advanced, but works
More Responsive Login and Phone Calls

Getting ready for a big release

Category: News and Updates
Posted: 2008-10-09 21:45

We are about to release the official kerPlunk! program. This release will take the program out of the beta stage. We have been working hard to make the program as stable as possible and we are making some minor changes and fixing bugs as find them. Our homebrew codecs have been updated since we had first started building the program and we have increased voice quality slightly (We have been experimenting). When we get some of the minor bugs worked out as we release the program updates, our focus will be moved to the voice quality.

The entire server framework is complete and is entirely scalable to fit our needs. It is very fast and flexible so we won't have any trouble adding on or making modifications. It is built upon ZwebApps/1.0 (a customizable server platform by Travis Cunningham) which handles all of the requests and automatically backs up data onto other servers just in case one of them goes out.

Stay tuned to this blog as we will keep you up to date on the release of kerPlunk!
